Explore Ferntree Gully Reserve – A Hidden Rainforest Near Rylstone

Just a 40-minute drive from Kandos Fairways Motel, Ferntree Gully Reserve is one of the region’s most spectacular natural escapes. Located 25km north of Rylstone, this hidden gem offers lush rainforest gullies, towering rock formations, and peaceful bushwalking trails — perfect for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers alike.

A Walk Through Two Worlds

Ferntree Gully is home to a remarkable transition of plant life — from dry sclerophyll forest to cool temperate rainforest — all within a 2.5km loop walk. Descend into a narrow, fern-filled valley, where large fig trees and tangled roots create a prehistoric atmosphere, before climbing up to the rocky ridges above for panoramic views over the gully and beyond.

Walkers should bring food, water, and sturdy shoes. The loop track includes steep sections, stone steps, and areas requiring moderate fitness and some scrambling. A short boardwalk section provides easy access to one of the most beautiful, fern-rich areas while protecting the sensitive ecosystem.

Flora, Fauna & Rare Finds
Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of native wildlife, including:

• Lyrebirds, scrub turkeys, and the rare powerful owl
• Glossy black cockatoos and a chorus of bush birds
• Echidnas, wallabies, wombats, and even marsupial mice

How to Get There
From Rylstone, take Bylong Valley Way for 17km, then turn off onto an unsealed road for 3km to reach the Ferntree Gully picnic area and trailhead. The drive itself is scenic and a great introduction to the area’s natural beauty.
